Historical Notes
On 22/11/1725 the Noblewoman Aurelia Imperiale, Duchess of Martina Franca, widow of Don Petracone V Caracciolo, with a notarial deed, donated some buildings,
lands and capital to the Conservatory dedicated to Santa Maria della Misericordia,
with headquarters in Martina Franca, established by Her and desired for herself and her future heirs.

The Caracciolo Foundation thus constituted would have administered the shelter for poor, orphaned and fearful maidens,
who would have remained subject to the Patronage of the Ducal House of Martina Frana and to the Civil Authority;
With Royal Assent of 3 June 1773 the Conservatory was recognized civilly “concedimus et impartimus
– nostrum regalem asensum pro sanatoria dicta fondationes et dationes Conservatorii iam dicti – “

with Papal Assent of 1775 it obtained authorization to guard the Holy Oil and to administer the Viaticum, the blessing and burial by the confessor chosen by the ducal house
and
with Legislative Decree 28/2/1897 it was normally declared a Public Charity Institution.
